You need to contact your local council or read your business rates bill to see what amount the council have as your rateable value. Your rateable value is based on the size of your property and how much rent you are likely to pay and this information should have been requested by your local council.
If the council has
NOT asked you what your RATEABLE VALUE is then you should contact them or contact the VOA office or
click here to establish what your rateable value is.
Small business rate relief is only available for those businesses that are paying rents of £15,000 or lower.
If your rateable
value is above £15,000 then you can apply for transitional relief. The PharmaPlus office has done this on our own premises and this gave us a discount of £1,609.99 for the year 2017/2018.
Transitional relief should not be considered to be a discount. However, it caps the amount that a council can increase the amount of business rates every year before they revalue your rateable value.
You can also see your neighbouring businesses rateable value and
this should be the same (per meter square). If you feel your rates have increased by a few hundred pounds there is not much you can do, but if they have increased by £10,000 like one of our members has experienced (shared with us on the Pharma Plus Whatsapp group) then you need to contact the VOA office on 03000 501501 or your local council immediately.
