Next is:

STEP 3: Inhaler technique catch up NMS -

Start providing inhaler technique checks as part of the catch up NMS service for patients prescribed a new inhaler with asthma or COPD during the COVID-19 pandemic (between 1st April 2020 and 31st August 2021).

What you need to do:

1.   All pharmacists must undertake CPPE inhaler technique for health professionals: getting it right e-learning and pass the e-assessment (updated since 15th April 2020) before providing the service.
2.   Identify patients who were prescribed a new inhaler (i.e. for the first time or changed to a new inhaler device) between 1st April 2020 to 31st August 2021 but did not have their inhaler technique checked due to the COVID-19 pandemic.
3.   Offer an inhaler technique check as part of the catch-up NMS arrangements.
4.   Pharmacists are able to conduct remote inhaler technique checks – please read - Taskforce for Lung Health position paper on optimising inhaler technique remotely.
5.   Download the App onto your phone and have it loaded on computers in the pharmacy and encourage the patient to download it on their phone - https://www.rightbreathe.com/
  a.   This resource explains how to use every type of inhaler – use this during your consultations and watch this together with your patients
6.   Data collection
  a.   Download the Data collection form.
  b.   Record how many pharmacists have undertaken the training and passed.
  c.   Total number of patients identified for the service who were asked if they had an inhaler check between 1st April 2020 and 31st August 2020.
  d.   Total number of patients who answered no and where offered a catch up NMS and inhaler technique check.
  e.   Total number of patients who were provided a face-to-face service.
  f.   Total number of patients offered a remote service.
  g.   Total number of patients referred to their prescriber for identified issues.

We have also attached the PharmaPlus NMS guide to help you with the new NMS changes. Please note some PMR systems have updated their drug file to flag the new conditions including Proscript.
