Dear Member,
The GPhC has recently released further guidance on it’s stance and role in relation to COVID-19 testing kits. More information on this can be found on the following website at:
https://www.pharmacyregulation.org/standards/guidance/qa-coronavirus/covid-19-qa-pharmacy-owners#antibody-testing
The GPhC has mentioned that, “We do not have the jurisdiction or capability to form our own view on the legality, safety or efficacy of particular types of tests or kits, or the advisability of their use in public health terms. Our approach therefore is to support the positions taken by the relevant authorities …”
They have also continued to support the position that “it is not appropriate for community pharmacy to be selling and recommending rapid COVID-19 antibody test kits at this point in time.” The reasons for their decision have been mentioned in the link above but they have mentioned that this is a fast-changing landscape, and it may change in the future.
They have mentioned that they have not taken a position in any other form of COVID-19 test. So, it is possible that you could offer other tests in your pharmacy. However, you will need to conduct a risk assessment to make sure that the test that you offer meets the needs of your patients. The factors that you need to consider are as follows – ensure that you complete on of these
assessments (please see template attached) if you intend to offer COVID-19 tests in your pharmacy.
