National Clinical Audit 2019/20 – Antimicrobial Stewardship

Dear Member,

This audit is specifically aimed at advice provided to patients on upper respiratory tract infections (URTI). Undertaking the audit is a contractual requirement; if a pharmacy contractor does not undertake the audit, it is a breach of their contractual responsibilities.

Aims of the Audit:
• Provide appropriate advice on managing symptoms of URTI
• Patient understanding on expected duration of symptoms and how to manage these appropriately
• To help patients avoid spreading infection
• Reinforce the message that antibiotics may not be appropriate or effective, particularly for illnesses that are viral in origin
• Patient understanding of ‘red flag’ symptoms and when to seek further advice.

What you need to do:

1. Staff training - Treating your infection – Respiratory Tract Infection – Patient Leaflet – Be able to communicate this to patients & handout these leaflets to patients with symptoms of URTI’s

2. Print out the data collection sheets

3. Start your audit collection for an initial 5 days on 9th March 2020:

a) Those aged over 18 years who display symptoms of an URTI – including OTC consultations, CPCS consultations, prescriptions, phone calls, etc.

b) 95% of people who attend the pharmacy for advice on symptoms of URTI are offered clinically appropriate advice on selfcare, duration of symptoms and when to seek further support.

c) Audit must be completed by 31st March 2020

4. Extend to 10 days if you do not meet the target of 10 patients

5. Once completed enter your audit data onto MYS by 28th April 2020

6. Complete Appendix D - Pharmacy contractor review of the audit results

The audit will be repeated in 2020/21 in order for pharmacies to complete the audit cycle and demonstrate any improvements in offers of self-care advice.
