PIP Code Licensing

Dear Colleagues

We have recently had a number of comments relating to queries regarding PIP code on our Whats App group. Below is information just received from the NPA that we asked them for relating to the topic.

You will see that, although the news is not ideal, and its resolution may not be immediate it does give a bit more understanding of where we are with it.

The PIP Code ownership of copyright is held jointly by the NPA and C&D Data (owned by parent company Informa), and each company has a specific licence; the NPA holds the Code User Rights Licence and C&D holds the code Publishing Licence.

For pharmacies to use PIP Codes for ordering purposes, both licences are therefore required.

NPA membership includes the User Licence and is not required to purchase the User Licence.

The Publishing Licence is not included in the NPA membership.

The Publishing License consequently must be paid for (to C&D who maintain and update the database) during the dispensing and ordering processes.

It is highly likely that you are using PIP Code for ordering products. All PMR systems and almost all leading wholesalers use PIP codes. The codes also cover all POM and OTC products.

Recognising that there is some confusion about end-user payments to C&D for PIP Code, the NPA is in current discussions with C&D about the matter. However, there is no guarantee that this will result in changes to the current arrangements.
