Dental Prescription Reimbursement Issues With Handwritten Amendments

Dear Member,

It has been brought to our attention that many pharmacies maybe dispensing dental prescriptions with handwritten amendments incorrectly and as a result being reimbursed for less than what has been handed out. Please see three examples below:

Reimbursed for 3 tubes

Item description plus quantity is part of the stamp

You will be reimbursed for 1 tube only

Handwritten amendment has not been authorised by the dentist as it has not been initialled/signed and dated

Therefore it is not a legally valid amendment and will not be reimbursed by the NHSBSA

Reimbursed for 3 tubes

Handwritten amendment has been initialled by the dentist and therefore reimbursement will be for the full quantity

If you received a stamped dental prescription:

Check if the quantity is included within the stamp – if so no additional signatures are required
If there is a hand amendment – Make sure it is signed/initialled & dated
If there is no signature/ initial and date send the prescription back to the prescriber to be initialled and dated or alternatively only supply what is included on the stamp
When sorting prescriptions at the end of the month ensure prescriptions with any hand amendments are filed in the red separator
