Dear Member,
RE: Private Flu Vaccinations – Key Timings and Recommendations
Here is an updated approach for
administering private flu vaccinations for 2024, based on NHS guidance and recommendations from the Joint Committee on Vaccination and Immunisation (JCVI):
- Private Flu Vaccinations: You may begin vaccinating as soon as your Patient Group Direction (PGD) allows, following the necessary prescribing protocols. We recommend using the PharmaDoctor PGD for Private flu
Vaccinations.
- Timing Based on NHS Guidance: JCVI and NHS guidelines suggest vaccinating closer to when flu typically circulates (December/January), aiming for a start date of 3rd October to ensure peak protection through the winter months. This also aligns with the Covid vaccination schedule.
- Advising Patients: Encourage private patients to get vaccinated from October onwards for better protection during the peak flu season. However, if they wish to receive it earlier, you can proceed if permitted by your PGD.
- GPs Administering Early Vaccinations: We are aware that some GPs have started administering NHS flu vaccinations
early. However, the NHS has confirmed that payments will not be made for vaccinations given prematurely to both pharmacies and GPs. We will monitor developments closely.
