The RPS updated its guidelines on the roles of prescribing and dispensing / supply / administration within healthcare:
• Separation of Roles: Traditionally, separate healthcare professionals are responsible for prescribing and dispensing/administering medicines.
• New Guidance: In certain situations, based on a risk assessment and the patient’s best interest, the same
healthcare professional may now prescribe and dispense/administer medicines.
• Reasons for Change: Advances in healthcare practices and the growing number of qualified prescribers necessitate this flexibility.
• Implementation: This approach allows for more integrated care in community settings and urgent care, improving patient experience and access to medicines.
• Safety Measures: A risk assessment and audit trail are required when the same professional
prescribes and dispenses/administers medicines, ensuring patient safety
