As you are aware, all recruitment for trainee foundation pharmacists will go through Oriel for recruitment for 2025-2026, this is to align training standards with other professions like medics and nurses and to standardise training for the different pharmacy sectors.  

Why is this important?

From 2025, foundation trainee pharmacists will be independent prescribers, this is a big change, which means changes to the training programme.

What else is new which impacts you?

There will be learning outcomes related to prescribing therefore the trainee will have to have access to a designated prescribing practitioner (DPP). Initial indications suggest that the DPP must be a prescriber within an NHS setting as the requirement stipulates that the trainee should be completing their supervised prescribing hours within a prescribing learning environment. However, we will update you if we gain any more insight into this.

Funding has increased to £26,500 to account for costs for salary, training, and the involvement of a DPP.

Rest assured you will not be asked for DPP details or the details for the prescribing learning environment at the point of registration so you will have time to find one before the start if the training year.

To recruit a foundation trainee pharmacist for the 2025-26 foundation training year, you must register with the National Recruitment Scheme (Oriel) by 1st March 2024.
