Dear Member,

Starting in April 2023, 3,000 training places will be available for pharmacists who meet the eligibility criteria to become independent prescribers, including community pharmacists and others working in pharmacy. Several universities are offering courses with multiple dates for cohort intakes, and applications are now open. Eligible pharmacists are encouraged to apply as soon as possible.

Cohorts began in September 2022, with several start dates available, depending on the university provider. You can find a list of approved universities at https://www.hee.nhs.uk/our-work/pharmacy/independent-prescribing/pharmacy-integration-programme-approved-suppliers. 

To be eligible, pharmacists must have:

1. The support of an identified designated prescribing practitioner (DPP),
2. A general practice to work in,
3. Evidence that they meet the course provider eligibility criteria (specific for each university), and
4. A commitment to using the skill within their area of competence and expertise.

Successful applicants to one of the approved universities will be allocated a fully funded place directly by the university and will not need to apply separately to HEE for funding.
