Independent Prescribing in the Future

Once in a while, there are developments in community pharmacy - and pharmacy in general - that will be game-changers. Recently, the government implemented a plan to provide new graduates who have studied pharmacy at university with the ability to prescribe. The government's plan will create the first cohort of pharmacy independent prescriber graduates in 2026.

We are sending you this email now to prepare you for the future and to ensure that you do not get left behind. PharmaPlus is here to support you.

The Future of Pharmacy

The ability for graduates to prescribe is monumental in how future services will develop. It will completely change the landscape for pharmacy in the future. There are but only a handful of changes in community pharmacy that can match this development. The changes lead to a considerable problem for existing pharmacists who are not prescribers. An unofficial two-tier system of pharmacists will likely form - those that are prescribers and those that are not.

The year 2026 is not too far away, and we recommend that you now consider how you will fit into the new scheme of how things will work in the future. PharmaPlus has been mentioning this for many years. The future for pharmacy is undoubtedly in providing clinical services in your pharmacy, not just dispensing income.

We recommend that you consider how you will become an independent prescriber to keep up with the future. It would be best if you considered this now rather than later.

The course itself requires you to be in a GP practice for at least 90 hours or more. You will also need to complete a considerable amount of work outside of the practice. The requirements can quite easily overwhelm an already busy schedule. However, it is likely that you will get left behind if you do not develop these skills.
